Born the sixth of sixteen children to a family of sharecroppers in Tonieville, Kentucky. United States Navy Master Diver Carl Brashear would, over the course of an incredible life, overcome impossible odds; joining the US Navy before its 1958 desegregation and fighting the racism of his classmates to become the first African American to attend and graduate from the Navy’s Diving & Salvage School. In 1966, while searching for a missing B28 nuclear bomb in a wreck off the coast of Spain, Brashear’s leg was nearly sheared off below the knee, and was eventually amputated. Once again, Brashear did the impossible, and became the first amputee to be recertified as a Navy Diver in 1968. He was one of the first African Americans to reach the rank of Master Diver, and in his distinguished career would eventually earn the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer.

“It’s not a sin to get knocked down; it’s a sin to stay down.” Brashear once said, enumerating a personal philosophy which seems to embody the legacy of the great American.

In this Limited Edition, Oris seeks to honor the unshakeable purpose, fierce determination, and personal history of Carl Brashear; combining their retro-styled Divers 65 line with the cutting-edge in-house Calibre 401 movement conceived entirely in-house by master Swiss engineers. The movement offers elevated levels of antimagnetism and a five-day power reserve, and comes with a 10-year warranty and 10-year recommended service intervals.
